Global Risk Solutions sponsors event to enhance wildlife environmental response
How far would you ride a bike to raise money and awareness for a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates wildlife after environmental disasters? Global Risk Solutions’ Peter Wiswell is riding from California to Delaware, and GRS is proud to be one of his sponsors.
Wiswell, Executive General Adjuster and Manager of Marine Claims in GRS’ Environmental Risk Management Solutions division, began pedaling May 4 in San Francisco to benefit Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc. While some friends will accompany him on portions of the route, Wiswell has committed to ride the entire way to Tri-State Bird Rescue’s headquarters in Newark, Delaware – a journey of nearly 3,000 miles.
Along the way, he will complete 53 segments and cross multiple major waterways, including the Sacramento River, Mississippi River, Potomac River and along Chesapeake Bay. The cross-country bicycle ride is part of Wheels for Wings, an event that will help Tri-State Bird Rescue raise funds to purchase a new response vehicle for oiled wildlife. As of May 12, Wheels for Wings has raised nearly half of its goal of $75,000.
Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, which has been responded to wildlife in the aftermath of oil spills since 1976, has a trained staff on call 24 hours a day to respond to wildlife contaminated by oil anywhere in the world. The rehabilitation process for oiled wildlife, especially birds, is a complex undertaking that requires crisis management skills and resources. Each year, Tri-State rehabilitates more than 3,000 native injured, orphaned or contaminated wild birds.
“Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research does outstanding work in responding to and treating wildlife affected by oil spills and other contaminants,” said Steve Gosser, Chief Executive Officer of GRS’ Environmental Risk Management Solutions. “GRS is proud to support Tri-State as well as the commitment Peter Wiswell is making as part of Wheels for Wings.”
Arthur “Kip” Radigan, Group CEO of GRS, added: “Volunteering to ride almost 3,000 miles to support Tri-State Bird Rescue and raise awareness of the important work they do in environmental response is heroic, but it’s not really surprising for those who know Peter and our ERMS team.”
“Tri-State and ERMS are very aligned in our respective missions to respond to environmental disasters, mitigate risks and enable recovery. Tri-State and GRS both take a teamwork approach that enables effective crisis response and delivers better outcomes,” Radigan said.
